What Does it Say? v19, 21, 22 A religious leader tells Jesus that He will follow Him wherever He goes. Jesus tells Him that He has no place to call home. A disciple says He wants to follow Jesus, but he needs to bury His Father first. Jesus tells him to let someone else do that and follow Him now.
What Does is Mean? This passage is not about whether or not we should follow Jesus or bury our parents; it is about considering what it will cost us to follow Jesus. The religious leader made a promise to follow Jesus without considering that he would have no home. The disciple thought about the cost, but didn't want to pay it. Following Jesus is to be more important to us than anything else in our lives. Jesus could see what was in the religious leader's heart and knew that he would not follow through on his commitment. The disciple did pay the price and followed Jesus. There will be a cost to follow Jesus, but the benefits of a relationship with Him far outweigh the cost. What is Jesus asking you to do that you are having a hard time with? What is the cost? Talk to God about it, tell Him how you feel and ask Him to help you make the right decision and then follow through.
