OPEN HAND RULE - Matthew 5:38-42

Matthew 5:39-42 says that if someone tries to take something from you; freely give it.  If they hit you; don't defend yourself.  If they need money; give more than they ask for.

What Does it Mean?  If we took this passage literally, it would mean we are supposed to have no personal boundaries and that is not in line with what the rest of the Bible teaches.  What message is Jesus trying to get across here?  Matthew 6:33 says that we are to seek first God's Kingdom and trust Him to take care of us. That would indicate our commitment to follow Jesus is supposed to be more important than anything else we have. We are not to hold on to anything with a closed fist and refuse to let it go if God asked us for it.  All the blessings God gives are to be held with an open hand.  What would your attitude be if you lost your husband, one of your kids, your home, or your security.  Ask God to help you trust Him, so that you would continue to seek Him first even in the loss of something you cherish.
