A little bit more about Rev. Dwight and Sandra Geiger

Way back in 1955 Dwight was born in Duncan, BC where his family attended the local Fellowship Baptist church [Bethel] and were involved in all the activities. For 20 years his early life was on a small farm where his Dad had fruit trees , cattle and harvested hay. Memories of those early years include driving tractors all over the valley harvesting hay during the summer for the cattle. Later his parents sold that farm and invested in what grew to be a large dairy farm at the foot of Mount Washington at Black Creek.

At the age of eight Dwight was at a Vacation Bible School led by Mrs. Robinson who explained the ABCs of salvation [Admit that you are a sinner, Believe that Jesus died for your sin, Confess that Jesus is Lord of your life]. This made logical sense to him and he prayed that prayer that night. In his teen years Dwight felt the call of God to ministry and was involved in leading youth activities in his church and upon graduation worked at Crofton Pulp and Paper for three years to earn enough money to go to Northwest Baptist Theological College and Seminary in Vancouver where he earned his Bachelor of Theology degree.

Sandra lived across the street from Dwight's Grandmother in Duncan and in the summer after graduation from high school Dwight had returned from a missions trip to South America and was now weekly mowing his grandmother's lawn. Sandra was somehow always looking out the window on Thursday afternoons and soon they met and dated and led youth group together and worked and married the summer after Dwight's first year at Bible School.

Their ministry years continued in a variety of paid and unpaid positions in Fellowship churches in BC and Alberta: Youth pastor at Ladner Baptist, Courtenay, Fort McMurray, Ladysmith; Assistant Pastor at Armstrong for 3 years and bivocational pastor in Port Hardy at the north end of the Island for 8 years where Dwight was the manager at Home Hardware as well as full time pastor with the church. Their longest ministry segment was in Sooke at the south end of the Island where they served for 19 years and saw the church grow from 70 to 160 and involved a land purchase and building of a new 300 seat facility that began to make a significant impact on the small community. Their last pastoral position was at Saanichton in Victoria as they led the church in a two year transition to become a satellite out of Saanich Baptist.

Dwight and Sandra have always had an interest in our Fellowship Camp Qwanoes in Crofton volunteering each summer for a few weeks in maintenance and leading the summer family camp for 10 years. It was Dwight's grandfather who found the property in 1965 and five years ago God convinced Dwight to become the Director of Operations for Qwanoes and Sandra took on the task of Camp Grandparents Coordinator. They have been serving there and occasionally doing relief preaching in the Cowichan Valley churches.

As retirement years are in their future, one of Dwight and Sandra's interests was to do interim [temporary] pastoral roles in churches that are between pastors, or where a pastor is going on Sabbatical or sick leave. Campbell River Baptist is the first in what is hopefully a series of God ordained ministry opportunities.  Dwight has had a connection with Campbell River Baptist that dates back to the late 60s, as his aunt and uncle, Carol and Rod Stevens, moved up here from Duncan. Later his parents attended Campbell River Baptist from their farm at Black Creek, so there was always a few Sundays every year Dwight and Sandra would attend the church when visiting at the farm.

Over the years Dwight and Sandra have been blessed with three children and six grandchildren. Stephen is the oldest and is married to Alycia. They have two children, Millie [6] and Wyatt [4]. Steve has been at Camp Qwanoes in some capacity for 25 year, most recently as the full time events coordinator. Alycia is the Assistant Children's Pastor at New Life Church in Duncan.

Sarah is the middle child and married to Rob in Cloverdale and they have three sons, Shawn [12], George [9] and Erik [8]. Sarah is Department Head of Special Needs at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School and Rob is a Real Estate Agent with Katronis in Surrey.  Matthew is the youngest and lives in Sooke but works as a carpenter in Sidney. He is currently struggling through a separation from his wife Samantha and they have a daughter, Olivia [8].

Pastor Dwight was ordained to the Gospel Ministry at Armstrong on March 28, 1987 and can add those letters REV [reverend]in front of his name. It is a title which is recognized within the community and amongst organized churches, however, the ministry of Pastor is really where he is called to work. Dwight enjoys teaching people who are eager to learn and seek to grasp the richness of what Jesus has done for us. Preaching is one of the things he most enjoys about the pastorate. He has discovered that his gifts and interests vary over the years depending on the needs of the church that he is leading.

Some of his hobbies include building model railroads in N scale, although he does own a 1955 model S set that his grandsons have to set up every time they come over. Because of the age of the engines it is always nerve wracking watching these children playing with potentially valuable antiques. [It is worth the memories]. Another of his hobbies is researching Euro games [board games coming out of Europe specifically Germany] which he attempts to build and try out. Sandra's hobbies include card making and baking [which they shouldn't be eating but give away to camp staff on a regular basis.]

Dwight and Sandra are settling into Campbell River.  Dwight has moved his computer into the church office and they have found a one bedroom apartment one block from the church building. They continue to make their home base in one side of a duplex in Crofton near the beach and look forward to being in Campbell River for up to 10 months. They will travel back to Crofton every two weeks to care for Sandra's mother who is still living on her own in Duncan.

As we continue to navigate through the Covid-19 pandemic:

  • may the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ lead us to worship Him more fully
  • may the love of God help us to care for one another more sincerely
  • may the fellowship of the Holy Spirit guide us as we seek to serve the city more passionately.
